Common questions

DSC questions, answered

Is a digital signature the same as a scanned image of my signature?
No. A scanned signature is just a picture with no legal weight. A DSC is a cryptographic key issued by a licensed Certifying Authority that binds a signature to your verified identity and to the document, giving it legal validity under the IT Act, 2000.
Is Aadhaar eSign the same as a DSC?
Related but different. Aadhaar eSign creates a one-time signature via OTP and needs no token, but isn't accepted everywhere. A DSC lives on a USB token, is reusable for 1–3 years, and is accepted across MCA, Income Tax, GST, DGFT and e-Tendering.
Can one DSC be used for multiple portals?
Yes. A single Class 3 signing certificate works across Income Tax, GST, MCA/ROC and EPFO. But e-Tendering usually needs a Combo certificate, and foreign trade on DGFT needs a separate DGFT DSC.
Can I hold more than one DSC at a time?
Yes — for example a personal Individual DSC and an Organisation DSC in your company's name, often on the same or separate tokens.
When my DSC expires, do I renew or reapply?
A DSC can't be extended once expired, so technically you obtain a fresh certificate. Renewing online before expiry is quicker and you can usually reuse your existing token.
Does each director need a separate DSC?
Yes. A DSC identifies an individual, so every director or authorised signatory who signs filings needs their own — it can't be shared.
Which operating systems and browsers work with a DSC?
A DSC works on Windows and macOS with the token's drivers. Most portals need a small signing utility (e.g. emBridge) and work best on current Chrome, Edge or Firefox.
How do I check my DSC details or validity?
Plug in your token and open the token management utility or your browser's certificate store to see the holder name, issuing CA, and valid-from / valid-to dates.
